As she drove back to Charlottesville the next morning, Sarah thought about the last time she’d seen Eli alive. They’d all eaten lunch together at a new open-air Italian place, where Eli had debated the Yankees vs. the Red Sox with Dan, raved about the seafood linguine, managed one of Caleb’s meltdowns with his usual patience and humor. It was a marvelous afternoon in late August, clear and cool, and Sarah would not know until after Eli’s accident just how vividly she’d been able to picture the days they would all spend together in the future, the years stretching lazily before them, just waiting to be filled with picnics and hikes and enormous meals like the one they’d only just finished.

Then, after settling the bill, they had caravaned up Highway 81 behind Eli and Grace and the boys to Endless Caverns. Sarah still remembered the chilly sensation of descending into the earth, and the story the guide told them about the caverns sitting undiscovered beneath the lush Virginia farmland for centuries until some children chasing a rabbit saw the creature disappear into a windy hole. She remembered too that when Eli had asked why they were called endless, the guide had explained that after years of expeditions, geologists still did not know where the caverns ended – no matter how far they explored, the tunnels just kept going. And Sarah remembered how that tour had made her think differently about the ground that had always been beneath her feet. It wasn’t all concrete or topsoil, green grass or wildflowers. There was a whole world under there, one that snaked and burrowed, widened and narrowed, darkly mysterious, unfathomably deep.
